By adapting George Polya’s four-step problem-solving framework into what I call The CPA Audit Method, you can deconstruct any simulation or multiple-choice question with surgical precision.
Here is how you apply the system: Client, Evidence, Standards, and the Unit Check.
Step 1: Client (The Question)
In a real-world audit, the first step is understanding the client and the specific "Question" being asked: Are these financial statements free from material misstatement?
Restate the Problem: Can you explain what the question is actually asking in one sentence?
Identify the Goal: Are you looking for an overstated asset (Existence) or an understated liability (Completeness)?
Filter the Noise: Just as an auditor ignores irrelevant client data, you must strike through "distractor" information in the word problem that doesn't affect the final calculation.
Step 2: Evidence (The Variables)
Once you understand the question, you need to gather your "Variables." In an audit, this is your fieldwork.
Vouching vs. Tracing: Use the logic of audit evidence to organize your variables. Are you "vouching" from the ledger back to a source document to verify a number exists? Or are you "tracing" from a source document forward to ensure a transaction was completed?
The Reliability Hierarchy: Treat the variables in the problem like audit evidence. Direct calculations or third-party confirmations (like bank balances mentioned in the prompt) are your high-reliability anchors.
Step 3: Standards (The Formulas)
This is where the "Plan" comes together. In the CPA Audit Method, your "Formulas" are the professional standards—specifically US GAAP or IFRS.
The Framework as a Theorem: If the problem involves a lease, your "Formula" is the present value of lease payments under ASC 842.
If it’s an intangible asset, you apply the straight-line amortization formula. Recalculation: Use these standards to reperform the client’s math. This is a high-level audit procedure that ensures the "Variables" from Step 2 fit the "Formulas" of Step 3.
Step 4: Audit (The Unit Check)
The final step is the most important: The Unit Check. Polya called this "Looking Back."
Footing and Cross-Footing: Quickly verify that your sub-totals add up vertically (footing) and horizontally (cross-footing).
If your schedule doesn't "tie out," your answer is wrong. Reasonableness Tests: Does the final number make sense?
If you are calculating interest expense and the result is higher than the total loan principal, you’ve failed the reasonableness test. Professional Skepticism: Question your own result. Did you answer the specific question asked, or did you stop at an intermediate calculation?
